NBBC was a nice place to base ourselves
We rented a condo directly on the beach in Nettle Bay. The owner, Elisa, was very gracious and made sure we had everything we needed. The area is still recovering from Hurricane Irma that devastated the island in 2017 so expectations were firmly in place. During our stay, protests in Marigot over mandatory Covid vaccine requirements and job firings for not being vaccinated were escalating to the torching of vehicles, senseless destruction of property, rock throwing at the Gendarmes and, sadly, an officer was shot in the leg. None of this was covered by media. Nettle Bay is minutes from Marigot and the action was spilling out in front of the condo complex. We were concerned and cautious but never felt unsafe. We enjoyed the pool and beach and hopped in our rental car to explore the rest of the island. The troubles were only in Marigot and did not seem to have support elsewhere on the island. We explored Red Bay, Maho (yes, we watched aircraft land and take off from the end of the runway that starts just about on the beach!), Mullett Bay and Orient Bay and a few others. Paradise where things have been rebuilt, heavy damage in many areas is still evident. In so far as NBBC, our condo was lovely and well finished. The adjacent unit was being worked on and there was construction material strewn about. The swimming pool was beautiful and well maintained. The tennis court has not been repaired. Not sure why, but 4 years after the hurricane, there is lots of broken glass to be found in the sand. Do your research. condo 4040 and the awful area of Nettle baie beach club
We rented a condo at Nettle Baie Beach club via VRBO. All pictures showed a paradise on the beach. Reality was different: a resort with empty pool, glass pieces and garbage every where, boarded up houses, shipwrecks on the beach and no proper access to the sea. The problem is not so much the state of the area, it is the simple fact of not telling what the visitor will see upon arrival. Sint Maarten is in a horrible state. And so are many of the buildings. And if the description of the owner tells us there is a swimming pool, then we expect this to be a fact. Not an empty broken pool, filled with dirt. If you travel to Sint Maarten ask for a description and pictures of the outside area!! All other islands hit by the hurricane have been able to clean and rebuild most of the buildings and infrastructure. Unfortunately that's not the case on this island..... A nice spot for a vacation...
We rented a condo called Happy Life from Jean-Pierre. Everything about the unit, the location, the manager, etc. was very good. The views are great and falling asleep to the sound of waves was great. As mentioned, there was work going on here too... some units are ready to go, some are being worked on and some appear to be boarded up. You might see piles of bricks or lumber, coils of tubing or hoses, a toilet, cans of paint, etc. as you walk around in here. There is a lot of space to park a rental car and the location was convenient for going to the Dutch or French side. There is also a quickie-mart across the street and a nice restaurant down in that same direction. Some reasons that I gave it four stars: The lingering debris. I understand that it takes time to recover from a hurricane but there is a lot going on here in terms of work, materials and debris. The pools. Not only were two of the pools inoperable but the one pool that WAS open was surrounded by a makeshift cyclone fence and there were no tables, chairs, loungers, umbrellas, etc. I like a good pool but I avoided these. Finally... the condition of the beach as mentioned by some others. There is broken glass everywhere. I saw pieces of what looked like a shattered dinner plate. I did see maintenance people out working on the pool, raking the sand, taking out trash, etc. but I also saw a lot of kids running around in sand that probably required at least a flip-flop. My wife and I sat out by the water a few afternoons enjoying the sun and we were commenting on how dangerous it might be to walk barefoot on the sand here. It has great potential. I'm sure more work will be done and it will be back better than ever. I would recommend it and I would stay here again. We rented a condo called Happy Life from Jean-Pierre. Amazing views
9 days was too short. There are still a number of properties that are totally gutted. Irma was horrible to this island. The beach does still have debris from the storm two years ago, but the remaining properties are worth staying here. Wonderful views. The pool are slated to be rebuilt and open by August/ September... maybe. 9 days was too short. There are still a number of properties that are totally gutted. Irma was horrible to this island.
