Beautiful and a little challenging.
Cocopa is a beautiful resort in a somewhat remote location. Only a little English is spoken by the staff so some patience and/or Japanese language skills are required. The cottages for the timeshare exchange are really cute but dated. There are four single beds (two per room) which could be a challenge for couples, especially since the rooms are only separated by a curtain. We relied upon their shuttle service to travel around the property and to and from the Sakakibara-Onsenguchi train station. They follow their schedule quite carefully, often leaving a few minutes early, so listen for the driver walking through the lobbies ringing a bell before departing. We had a day trip to Kyoto by train, and made it work with the shuttle and train schedules, although the last shuttle back to Cocopa leaves at 6:10 pm. Osaka is also just 90 minutes or so away by train. As others have stated, the breakfast buffet is excellent and a very good value at $11 US. We splurged for their shabu-shabu dinner one night, which cost about $130 US for two of us, with one drink each, including VAT. The onsite onsen is excellent, too, with a small bathing tax charged per night, per person. Be prepared for their cleaing charge of 9,000 yen at check-in. That fee and the bathing tax meant we paid about $100 US upon check-in for our four night stay. Overall, Cocopa is a beautiful place to escape from the congested urban areas in Japan. giving a one is too much but 0 not an option
over grown, unkempt, untidy, run down are rather kind to say about this place, we hand to pay an extra 18000 yen to stay there then 150 yen per night per person for spa which we didn't see or were informed that was there. No wifi except at reception. The area there does have seats but the windows are so dirty you can't see out of them & the ceiling has major water stains - not pleasant at all over grown, unkempt, untidy, run down are rather kind to say about this place, we hand to pay an extra 18000 yen to stay there then 150 yen per night per person for spa which we didn't see or were informed that was there. Lost in Nature
Cocopa sounds like "havana" but it is a resort for golfers and a weekend get-away. The individual wooden cottages are rustic and the golf course is well maintained. Located a bit off the radar in Hakusan cho amongst small towns - villages - rice fields - Tsu Prefecture - it is better accessible by car. Good For Japanese-Speakers With a Car
Disclaimer: Detailed & Wordy Review. My friend had offered my wife and I to stay with he and his brother for the New Year holiday. We aren’t golfers, but the potential opportunity to visit an area neighboring the Ise Jingu, Iga ninjas, & Nara wildlife was too good to pass up. Not being too familiar with the area, we ended up taking a roundabout way to the hotel that warranted a 45 minute hike through some backroads and trails (Note: getting off at Sakakibara-Onsenguchi via the Kintetsu line is the best and simplest way to get there & I believe includes the shuttle bus also, but we didn’t know this until the day after arrival). The hike took us to a restricted area protected by a big metal fence & thick sharp shrubbery along the inclines. Needless to say hopping the fence was our only option and the thought of getting arrested would’ve probably been the best thing to happen if it had. Should your gps start making you go anywhere outside of a train station, please do NOT follow it! That now aside and all of us finally at the front desk of the Chateau Phoenix (locals refer to the area by both names), they gave us a room breakdown but advised we would be incurring a 9000 yen service charge fee just for using the facilities and 3000/day room service charge if we chose to not make our own beds (obviously we did). Meals are not included but you are urged to try their BBQ restaurant, occasional buffets, or their restaurant attached to the Chateau. All three do have significant price points (our dinner at the BBQ was about 7,500 yen per person for the fixed course with no substitutions). The internal shuttles run 24-7 and can go anywhere on resort property with exception of the actual greens. Now onto the cottages: make no mistake, they’re like miniature countryside homes. You have your entryway leading to a small kitchenette & two small bathrooms; one just being a toilet and the other a typical stand-up shower-Tub combo. There is NO CENTRAL HEATING nor are there any mini room heaters in the front walkway area I just described, so be prepared for 30 degree Fahrenheit temps all the time if there for Fall-Winter. We didn’t even use the refrigerator because the room kept everything ice cold. The living and bedrooms inside did have individual room heaters, a kotatsu, & a thin draped curtain for separating one guest room. Television had your basic channels & honestly the fit and finish weren’t bad at all. The dealbreaker for my wife though was how ice cold the bathrooms were, which inevitably hurt her stomach bad enough that she had no choice but to ask for a room at the Azalea (one of the other two hotel options in the resort). Going to and from hot temp and ice cold temp rooms will make you susceptible to the flu, so we didn’t take the risk of toughing things out. The staff have minimal English skills and you will likely need to repeat yourself more than twice to ensure the staff fully understands you even if you happen to be a native Japanese speaker. Misunderstandings of price breakdowns can and will happen. Final hurdle that was a dealbreaker for us was how every event we wanted to go to was at least a good two hours to access one-way. Since we were also using transit for the New Year, seating and reservations were also extremely limited. Let’s say you wanted to visit Ise Jingu and took the morning shuttle to the station at 8:10. Arrival to station would be about 45 minutes later, almost 9am. Transit time and reserving tickets will hit you with about 1.5hrs average. Now you’ll need to wait for the tour bus or a cab to take you to the shrine, another 30minutes one way. Assuming you have to be back by the 6:10 final shuttle bus to the resort, you’d have to finish all your sightseeing by 2 to 3pm assuming of course you’d already reserved your return seats prior. Our grand plan got us to Ise Jingu at 11am, so we had a little under 3hrs to shop for omamori, walk without stopping through each outer segment of the shrine, and try some amazake. There were also local lines taking us to some of the stalls and shops, so very easy to lose time there especially if you want to relax somewhere with a bite to eat. Do keep in mind we were only talking about going from Mie to Ise here. Attempting to venture to more popular destinations like Osaka will leave you stranded. My friend and I ended up parting ways on the last day of his timeshare because we needed to visit my family in Okayama & Namba. Need to just save money and head to a convenience store? Nearest one will be the Family Mart 3.5 miles down the road. The walk isn’t difficult or anything, but roads are poorly lit with wild animals scouring the taller thickets. Tactical flashlights with high lumen output & strobe function help with both animals and oncoming vehicles (there aren’t many sidewalks). Oh and one more thing: almost all the trains near here are NOT via JR, so a JR pass is useless. OVERALL: If you can get a hold of a Kokusai Menkyo (International Driver License) & rent a car, I guarantee you’ll have a better time than us. If you love golf and bring your own clubs, I guarantee you’ll have a better time than us. If you are either good against the cold or can pack a small room heater capable of going from 240v-100v, I guarantee you’ll have a better time than us. +5 Stars for the cottage being just like a local Japanese house. -2 Stars for difficulties handling hikes & public transit here. -1 Star for some customer service hiccups— I had to repeat myself multiple times to different associates to figure out which people cared and which just gave me a ‘yes’ simply to make me leave their desk areas. Don’t worry, you’ll be able to figure that out easily. Just make sure your Japanese is on par with the others (forgive the golf pun...) Disclaimer: Detailed & Wordy Review. Great place to be based when sight seeing or to play a great round of golf
Kokopa resort has a great shuttle service around the resort. The onsen (hot spring baths) are magnificent. Wonderful views from the hotel on the hill and the golf club overlooking the golf greens and the autumn leaves in the country side. The buffet breakfast is to die for. Hotel staff did all they could to help us. Even when we arrived after the last shuttle bus from the station. I only gave a four because there are some difficulties getting to and from the area by train (Thank goodness we speak Japanese). The golf course really looks like a professional course (the 2019 Japanese women's open will be held here). This resort offers a pool. However, in regard to families, it is probably more suited to being a base for sight seeing around the region in places such as Nara, Ninja village, Ise Jingu Shrine and other natural and man made wonders in the region. Excellent access to Kyoto, Nagoya and Osaka with options of a limited express, express and local trains.. However, be aware the shuttle bus to and from the resort to the closest train station ends early evening. Kokopa resort has a great shuttle service around the resort.
