Might be worth it at a much lower price point
My family and I stayed at the Great Wolf Lodge Resort in Scottsdale for a staycation with the kids. So starting with the pros, the place is overall pretty cute. There are a lot of smaller activities to do in addition to the water park. The food (and service - thanks Tanner!) at the restaurant is great and there are a lot of convenient (albeit not always healthy) options to eat all around the resort. I also appreciated the app and virtual assistant, though the front desk didn’t tell us about the app upon checking in so it took a day and a half to figure out all those details that would have otherwise quickly oriented us to the resort. However, at this price point the thing we were most disappointed by was the room itself. We were sleeping on a very low-grade pillow and mattress with an unfitted sheet on bottom and a cheap duvet insert sandwiched between two more loose sheets. I woke up with back and neck problems, was uncomfortable all night, and all my bedding moved around beneath and on top of me all night. It was infuriating. I’m 30 years old and shouldn’t have issues sleeping on a bed. Room service never came during our stay (we stayed 2 days). Hardware was falling off of the wall and there was a single bar of soap in the whole room My family and I stayed at the Great Wolf Lodge Resort in Scottsdale for a staycation with the kids. Not what we expected
The reasons we we would only give 2 stars which is still being generous considering what our expectations and experience was. Our stay was for our Anniversary. The first night we thought it was weird that everything closed at 11pm since there were a lot of adults, but we figured it was due to being a Friday night and that the next night would be better. The first night we noticed that one of the beds was not as clean as expected, but we only used one bed so we thought it would be fine. The next morning came and the room was nice and bright for us to see all the non cleaned areas from prior guest. By the sink we found a lot of hair, pins and what seemed to be leftover toothpaste The reasons we we would only give 2 stars which is still being generous considering what our expectations and experience was. Vacation or Work Out, I'm exhausted!
Driving up from Oro Valley to Great Wolf Lodge is a quick 1.5 hour drive, nearly all freeway. The kids heard great things about this waterpark and were begging us to leave at 9AM. We went during Thanksgiving break, rates were much higher than usual at $349 & $196/night...then you add on $30/night resort fee, 4 different taxes and a sustainability fee. So it really comes to $445 & $258 for our Friday and Saturday night stay. My expectations are high at this price point. Driving up the I-10 freeway I get a text message from a virtual agent, Willow saying, "We look forward to your visit, Howls!" whoa...how nice! Not as personable as a loyalty ambassador making a real phone call, but this is 2021. I text back we are on our way. We arrive shortly before noon. Masks are required to be worn indoors, and there are plenty of disposable masks available inside the hotel. Inside the waterpark, which is also indoors, masks are not required. I walk into a beautifully decorated lobby with snowflakes hanging from the ceiling, a tall Christmas tree and a fireplace with metal wolves decorating the stone. There is no queue and I walk up to the front desk agent. She tells me she cannot hand out wristbands to the waterpark until at least noon. So we decide to go eat. Almost walking distance from the lodge is a ton of places to eat. Chipotle, McDonalds, Taco Bell, Arbys, Blimpies, Buffalo Wild Wings, Denny's, Mongolian BBQ, Sushi, and there is a Target and Ross right there as well. I'm starting to regret buying the breakfast dining package and the $200 food credit for the price of $170 when all of these places are so close. We came back to the Lodge at 12:15pm. The front desk agent gave me 4 wristbands. The two adult ones look slightly different than the kids. The adult wristbands also act as our room keys and charging privilege's. How amazing is that?! I just hold my wristband up to my door handle and it unlocks the door. When I am buying anything in the resort, I just hold my wristband up to this sensor and it charges the items to my room. I love the convenience of this, especially being in a waterpark. I don't need to physically carry my room key or wallet. We are directed across the hall to the gift shop to go pick up our complementary wolf ear headband. How clever...make my children walk into a gift shop and not hope they do not want to buy anything else...get the ears and get out! But they still yet, ask if I want to upgrade our wolf ears for $7.99 to a nicer pair on the wall. No thank you Wolf Lodge. I see how you are trying to copy the Disney Ear trend, but it's not working here. Our room was up on the 5th floor (6 floors total) we booked the standard family suite. We walked into the room and there is bathroom with tub/shower combo and toilet to the left, and closet to the right. The sink to the bathroom is actually in the bedroom next to the closet. Kind of an odd place, with water splashing on the carpet. We had two queen bed, and a pull out couch. Flat scree TV with rotating bracket on the wall. You can login to your Netflix account on the TV. Parking lot view for us, with soccer fields in the distance. There is no maid service during our stay, as a covid protocol. I requested extra towels on the second night and it took over an hour to deliver. After checking in, we went straight to the waterpark. Getting from the room to the waterpark, you have to walk past several places that your kids will love. Dunkin' Donuts, Build a Bear Workshop, a Candy Store, Ben and Jerry's ice cream, Dip n Dots, a miniature 9 hole golf course, a mine for gemstones, a magic wand place to do a quest adventure, a rock wall climbing course, and a rope climbing course. Of course all of these things cost extra. There is an employee at the entrance to the water park. They are checking that you don't bring in any outside food or beverage. They are checking for heights of smaller children and tagging them with wristbands if they don't reach certain height requirements. You walk into the large waterpark and the towel room is directly to the left. You scan your wristband and check out as many towels as you need. You scan your wristband again when you return them. $15 charge for a lost towel. Plenty of chairs, we chose a spot near the lazy river. There is a kids area with the smaller slides and large bucket of water that dumps in the center. There is a wave pool on the far right side. The waves come on for awhile, then stop completely. There is a howling sound in the room and that tells you the waves are starting up again, kids start running to the wave pool. You would think there was free candy in that wave pool, the way these kids run to it. There is a small splash pad with two little slides in the center, perfect for toddlers. There are private cabana rentals along the top. The lazy river is small, but entertaining enough for everyone. There are 5 decent rides. Four are tube slides, and one ride is called the Wolf Tail. On the Wolf Tail, you step onto a platform and a glass door shuts you inside. There is a countdown inside, 3-2-1 and the floor drops from beneath you and you slide down a tube so quickly with water splashing in your face. It was thrilling, and I only went once to try it. Two of the tube slides you have to walk up about 4 flights of stairs and it is either single or double rider and you have to carry the tube with you up those stairs. The other tube slides you have to walk up about 6 flights of stairs and it is either 2-4 people or 2-5 people. There is a conveyor belt bring up these large round tubes for these rides. I'm 40 years old and in decent shape...but 3 days of all this stair climbing and I. Am. Exhausted! By day two my calves and knees were aching as I went up these flights of stairs. I walk 12 hours at Disney just fine....this water park vacation is a work out! We added on the breakfast dining to our stay. It was all you can eat breakfast and I was not impressed with it. I was expecting made to order omelets or eggs...but I think with all these covid restrictions, they are limited. There is no toaster out for bagels. They do have in a plastic container, filled with a cold, non toasted bagel with cream cheese and salmon on top. It obviously did not taste fresh. There were some decent Mexican dishes for breakfast. The kids were content with cinnamon rolls and cereal. There is also oranges, apples, bananas, bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs, dried waffles. There was no coffee one day in the container and when I asked the only worker in the room about it, he said, "I don't speak English" well...lucky for him, I said "no mas cafe regular!" He went in the back to get more coffee....and I never saw him again. We ate our food on paper plates, with plastic utensils, and paper cups. Everything was a covid precaution. We bussed our own tables and threw everything away. Since we added on the dining credit to our room, we ordered food at the waterpark. The nachos were decent. But other foods like burgers, chicken fingers, pizza and pasta were not so good. Coming home I just want a fresh salad. After swimming all day, I just wanted a hot shower and to wash the strong smell of chlorine out from my hair. I did not pack my own shampoo and conditioner. Big mistake, because this "conditioning shampoo" you receive in the room is awful!!! My hair still smells like the pool and I can't comb any of these knots out. It's tempting to go down the street to Target for something. I usually love taking these little hotel toiletries home with me for later. Not these....they can have them. The toilet paper is rough in the room too. There is a small refrigerator in the room, with a microwave on each floor near the vending machines and ice maker. I brought a case of my own Trulies to drink. At the pool, they are $6/each. I was drinking one with my feet in the wave pool, and the lifeguard blew the whistle at me. Can't have beverages in the water. No floating down the lazy river with a drink in your hand here. The lifeguards are blowing their whistles frequently when they see violations. Kids jumping into the lazy river to cut across to the stairs for the raft rides...blow the whistle! A kid going across the lily pads floating in the water before the last kids finished his way across...blow the whistle! A kid on top of another's shoulders in the pool while playing basketball...blow the whistle! The lifeguards are attentive. Overall, the kids had a great time. We came with two other families and it really helped that the kids had their friends with them to go on all these rides. Otherwise, I would have been doing a lot more stairs as some rides need at least two riders. This place can get expensive with all the extra add on activities they offer. The food is not great and in the future I will not be buying the dining options. The refillable souvenir cup was worth it for us, along with the refillable Icyy cup. It's nice having the rooms so close to the waterpark, one afternoon I went back for a nap. I could always text virtual Willow if I needed anything. The kids rank vacation places as Disney number one, Legoland number two, and Great Wolf Lodge number three. They want to go back again with their friends. First....I need to rest my legs. Check your beds!!
We frequest GWL a few times a year and always have fun. The kids love it, its small enough to keep an eye on them, yet big enough for them to feel "big". Magiquest is a blast and keeps them busy for hours, all the activities are fun. Always recommend it until this visit... When we were going to bed and pulled the sheet back there was a prescription pill on the sheet. It was a tan colored, oval shaped pill with LL on one side and CO3 on the other. I am grateful that an adult was the one to pull back the cover and discover this before one of the 5 children in our room discovered it. It could have been extremely harmful and potentially lethal to a child to discover that and ingest it thinking it was a candy. When i addressed this with the housekeeping manager I was simply given a "sorry! We will definitely have some conversation about better practices. I will also extend your checkout to noon". Extended checkout hardly seems to be a solution. A family style resort that is geared specifically for families and now I have to be concerned about my child ingesting prescription medications because housekeeping didnt properly change out some sheets? This just seems to be a careless response and zero effort to really come to any kind of resolution. We frequest GWL a few times a year and always have fun. Kids loved it
Fun for kids of all ages in the indoor water park plus very nice outdoor pool area. Lifeguards are well trained; they are always scanning the water. Safe, clean facility. Helpful staff. Kids loved the Gem Mine and the Rock Wall. The wolf den bunk beds were a hit! Fun “Howl/Halloween “ party. Elevators were very efficient. There are lines at the big tube runs but patience pays off with an exciting ride. Lots of people, most of them kids! Kids did not want to leave.
