Magic and services definitely has gone down post COVID
We are a military family and wow Disney sure knows how to treat its service individuals. For paying over $400 a night we couldn’t get a late checkout, since our first day out of four days, we requested to have our room cleaned and NO ONE CAME. We were probably in the parks for 2-3 hours until we had to come back for our kid’s nap and within that time no one showed up, even though we have told the lady we are leaving right now. Disney also definitely is trying to earn whatever they lost during COVID because we brought a wagon type stroller which isn’t as big as the strollers we have seen other parents bring in AND we saw others with an actual wagon stroller in the parks BUT alas we weren’t allowed to take ours in and we had to go rent their strollers. The character interactions aren’t what they use to be. I understand everyone is trying to be safe, but that is the whole point of the character meetings. I don’t know what’s the point for those mobile checkouts because they are just as long as waiting in line. Also they don’t work have the time. Please test our your apps before putting it out there. No more fast passes. Something called the Genie, which isn’t even out yet. Although some people got through the fast lane? It was all confusing on how Disney is operating now. I’m sure you need to upgrade to get all the special things that use to be a part of coming to the parks. We are a military family and wow Disney sure knows how to treat its service individuals. Not Ready for a Post-Covid World
My partner and I stayed here with our family for a quick one night stay to visit Disney Land after it finally opened up post-pandemic. I didn't have high hopes going into it, given all the recent reviews, but man was I even more disappointed than I expected. Check-in was great and efficient - though they never got our note requesting a king-bed, they were able to accommodate. That is where the magic ended. We went to the bell hop to pick up our bags and were told it would be 15 minutes of standing in the lobby before someone could retrieve them. We ended up having them delivered which took an about an hour for delivery. Our request for late check-out by one hour was denied and it took over 45 minutes for us to receive our car upon checkout (with a $50 fee attached). As other have mentioned, there is no room-service, cleaning is every other day, and the phones to front desk go unanswered. The extraordinary amount of money ($1000+ for a weekend night) Disney expects folks to shell out for a lackluster experience is shocking and literally highway robbery. When you're spending that kind of money, you expect a certain caliber of experience and Grand California can't deliver. This isn't the fault of the staff, who were generally lovely and as helpful as possible, it's a systemic issue. Disney doesn't have the resources in place to support the number of guests, leading to an awful customer experience at top dollar. Even though the hotel has a killer location when visiting the parks, I would suggest skipping it if you're expecting a positive guest experience. Just read the overwhelmingly negative reviews over the past few months and stay at the Westin down the street. Best Location
We booked this hotel mostly because of the great location. There's one entrance right in Downtown Disney and another directly into California Adventure Park. Self-parking is across the street from the hotel and very close to another entrance to Downtown Disney. The lobby is beautiful, with high ceilings and a luxury lodge feel. Staff were friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. Our room was not spectacular, but the beds were very comfortable. I would stay here again just for the convenient location, even though it was expensive. We booked this hotel mostly because of the great location. Not worth the expense
I, like many others, had high hopes for this hotel. It was our first time staying at a Disney resort, and I'll admit my expectations were high for $750/night. I was not disappointed when we first arrived. The lobby is stunning. Check in was smooth as we arrived on a Thursday afternoon. Being close to the parks and Downtown Disney was awesome. That's where the magic ended. We tried to make dinner reservations at the onsite restaurants and they were all booked. Solid. For the whole weekend. Breakfast. Lunch. Dinner. No availability. The next day we decided to take the kids to the pool. I wasn't surprised the cabanas were all booked, but the whole time we were there, not a single lounge chair was available. We hounded the poolside bar till we could get a spot, even though there were plenty of empty spots at the adjacent bartop ("those are reserved"). I did overhear two people in nearby loungers complaining to a manager that they had been there an hour without having a server come by. I will say that the bartenders were awesome! Despite being understaffed and overworked, they kept smiling and joking with us. Eric was great! The room is basic and a bit small. I wished the TV offered logins to streaming services - at least Disney+! But all you got was basic cable. Housekeeping was non-existent until we requested it, and even then all they did was refresh the towels/toiletries. I was fine with keeping the same linens on the bed, but they didn't even make the beds. The day we left, we waited an hour for a bellman to come help with our bags. Thank God we didn't have a flight to catch. Let me just say that I realize we're in a post-pandemic labor shortage. I expect a certain amount of this. But Disney could do their Covid-weary "guests" AND "cast members" a solid by lowering their rates until they have the ability to provide the service and amenities warranting the high price tag. As for us, we'll be going back to the Marriott. I, like many others, had high hopes for this hotel. Looking to Spend a lit of money?
I had never been able to stay at a Disneyland hotel. Too expensive! This trip proved my concern. I planned a 2 night trip to attend the Oogy Boogie Bash. Since it was just 2 nights I decided to stay at the Disney Grand Californian. Total 2 night stay for 5 people in 2 rooms was $3156. The rooms are typical for an upgrade hotel. They didn't seen to big any bigger or fancy. We ate breakfast at one of the restaurants. I'm assuming due to Covid-19 they had menus via a QR code. I didn't realize it was a Character Breakfast. It was a buffet, which I seldom go to since I don't eat a lot. We ordered 2 mimosas. Breakfast for 5 was over $300. I know when you do Disney it's going to be expensive, this trip was excessive. On top of the tickets to the Oogy Boogy Bash $845 for 5 people, this vacation cost me over $5000 for a 2 day trip. A Disneyland vacation is not affordable for many families and it just seems excessive pricing all the way around. On a positive note, the staff were pleasant. The only real interaction was with the Bell Service. The person I worked with was great. This hotel offers several amenities, but if your trip is to visit the park there is not much chance to use much. My granddaughter did use the pool for about an hour. It was nice to walk right into California Adventure from the hotel The hotel is also connected to Downtown Disney. We did spend some time there. Ended up paying over $200 for dinner in a bowling alley. All in all it was the once in a life time vacation, because I'll never be able to afford it again.
