The Verandah
Great few days here with lovely room overlooking the bay. Great water sports and service, thoroughly recommend. Our second trip, some changes with new hotel built across the bay but doesn’t spoil anything. Great few days here with lovely room overlooking the bay. A Friendly Welcome to Antigua
We travelled from the UK to The Verandah Resort for a week’s holiday and it’s a fine resort. Being on a headland there was a lot of uphill and downhill walking across the site to access beaches and other public areas. The wildlife on show was great to see, from large Pelicans to a brief glimpse of the notoriously loud but diminutive Caribbean Tree Frog. The check-in process was chaotic. One poor receptionist was left to deal with over a dozen Brits turning up almost together. In the end she effectively checked in several people all at once, giving a demonstration of how the in-room safe lock works (it’s important stuff!). We were fortunate in researching a potential room ahead of our arrival and e-mailing the resort with our room request. This involved Google Earth and a search for the resort map online. We got exactly the room we requested. As the reception area is at sea level and all of the rooms aren’t, a golf cart takes you and your luggage to your room. Note: there’s a big change in altitude. The room was spacious and clean, with the surprising addition of a basic kitchen. The balcony was huge and had a great view of the sunrise. The wall-mounted TV was pushed into the wall for two reasons; leaving the TV out means that you’re going to bang your head on it (it’s directly over a useful desk) and there was absolutely nothing worth watching for anyone from the UK. Our room had a wi-fi hub behind the TV and it worked well for us whilst in the room. The bath is a good size but the hot water is simply not hot enough to run a hot bath. It’s OK for a shower but I had to utilise the kettle and the microwave oven to heat up water for my wife to enjoy a hot bath. This scenario is more akin to camping rather than an ‘Elite’ Resort. Both of the beaches were of a good standard. The main beach is accessed from a steep staircase made from rough stones that get quite hot throughout the day. There were plenty of loungers available for the number of guests at the resort. The watersports are done from the main beach and are well managed. Kayaks (single and double), Paddleboards and Hobiecats are available to use. If you get becalmed a member of staff comes out to you in a speedboat if necessary. The ‘Rasta’ beach near to the reception area has food and alcohol available throughout the day and also has the new pool. Whilst we were there this pool was hardly ever used although it has some really good features. Both beaches have sea grass in the water and some people may find this uncomfortable underfoot. These beaches are also extremely shallow when wading into the sea. If you like a morning stroll before breakfast then go outside the main gate and turn right towards Long Bay Beach. The food and the restaurants are generally OK. There is a noticeboard near the ramp for the buffet restaurant informing guests of which restaurant is open on each day that week. During our stay the resort was getting busier with the influx of Thanksgiving arrivals and the start of our stay had a limited number of restaurants open in the evenings. Breakfast was at Seabreeze and is a buffet that is served by staff. It was generally good but, as with nearly all buffets, could be a little hotter. I particularly enjoyed the corn beef hash. Lunch for us was at the Beach Grill above the Main Beach. Here the food is simple but cooked very fresh. No complaints here. It is popular so expect a wait for a good view from the bar and your lunch. The tour desk was very useful. We found that booking the Xtreme Adventure (around the island in a very fast powerboat) was discounted through the tour desk compared to the online price. There was an (expected) extra charge for a taxi to Dickenson Bay for the tour pick-up but this was fine for us. Some negatives. The wi-fi at the resort is only good in either your room or directly at a bar or restaurant; don’t expect to stream audio at the main pool! Sometimes I found that the Main Bar was lacking staff as the bar opened for service, meaning an additional stroll to the Beach Bar where the staff were always ready for guests. Winning a complementary Spa treatment at the Manager’s Cocktail Party does not mean that the Spa can actually book you in when the guest wants to visit (our ‘prize’ was unused as we were only offered a booking when were due to leave for the airport). A lot has been said about the new Covid measures in place, requiring an extra daily resort fee of $24 per room per day. We had our room cleaned twice during a seven-night stay – but on concurrent days. There are lots of signs asking for mask wearing in busy areas (mostly followed) and lots of gel stations in the bars and restaurants. I don’t think that the amount charged is reflected in any additional service, given that we’ve travelled to a few places since March 2020. We were also fully aware of the charges, having done our research prior to arrival. In summary, a good resort with unique cliff-top rooms that just doesn’t quite have enough staff to cope at the moment. Enjoyable Holiday :-)
We have just come back from an enjoyable two weeks at the Veranda resort. They had opened at the start of October 2021, and when we arrived it was very quiet at the beginning, at times it felt like we were the only ones around ! Return Visit
So lovely to see resort open again as have visited many times. A few glitches in out Villa but all put right quickly. The staff have been wonderful..all cheerful and welcoming. Douglass on the beach..fantastic as usual. Stacey and Egbert always so cheery and hard working. The buffet service at breakfast can be a challenge because of Government restrictions on service etc but the staff try hard to counteract this and Management take this seriously . I look forward to yet another return visit soon as it is hard to beat ! So lovely to see resort open again as have visited many times. A few glitches in out Villa but all put right quickly. Some issues but positive overall
We have recently returned from a lovely week long holiday at the Verandah Resort and Spa on Antigua. On the whole I would give positive feedback. Like many holiday accommodation COVID-19 has caused issues. When we arrived there were very few other guests there. Good for many things but it did mean that there were no activities until the day we left, despite being given a schedule of activities for the whole week. The first few days meant that the all-inclusive food service took place in the Beach Bar - far from ideal. Luckily this was re-located back to the main restaurant after a few days although COVID restrictions meant that, although set out as a buffet, staff had to serve the food - again not ideal - it was impossible to see what was under the cloches and the dishes weren't always labelled - and sometimes it's nice to be able to see the dish? Also you can control your own portion sizes if serving yourself. The food, I would say is standard to good for an all-inclusive. Always hot and thoroughly cooked. The steak night was very good. It's worth trying the Buccaneer restaurant though you need to book - a nice a-la-carte restaurant with good food and excellent service. We didn't try the restaurant where there is an additional charge. The resort is well laid out with two lovely quiet beaches, a large main pool and an adult pool. They have recently added what they describe as an infinity pool though that isn't quite accurate - nice all the same. Rooms (we were in 214) were adequate but possibly a little dated. They have everything you need including a small kitchenette area with a fridge and microwave. We reported the poor hot water pressure in our shower twice but there was no improvement. We had decided that this must be the standard - it was pretty poor and really difficult to rinse shampoo off my long curly hair. We were lucky enough to be allowed to use room 244 to shower before we left - altogether a different experience - modernised with a lovely walk-in shower and decent hot water pressure. As regards logistics, when you do have capacity - as there was when we arrived, PLEASE consider putting families with young children who typically cry during the day and night in a room with no neighbours. I must say that all the staff were super friendly and helpful - despite not rectifying the shower problem. Other positives include the great availability of pool / beach towels and the fact that champagne was included in the all-inclusive arrangements. I didn't use the Spa which I normally would as I thought it was pretty expensive. My one big bug bear as far as this resort is concerned is the additional charges that were applied to our bill. We were NOT told of these additional charges in advance - a $24 USD charge per unit / night for enhanced cleaning PLUS a Tourism Guest Levy of $5 USD per person / night. Having been told that our room would only be serviced every other day (in fact it was only done twice in the week we were there) this additional cleaning charge seemed rather incongruous. The fact that we were not told of these additional charges at the time of of booking or before we arrived is really not acceptable and I will be taking this up with the tour operator, BA. The insistence on mask wearing in all public spaces, including when outdoors was also annoying and seemed unnecessary considering we had all had negative COVID-19 tests before we arrived and were double jabbed. I would definitely go back BUT visitors MUST be advised of additional charges before they arrive. We have recently returned from a lovely week long holiday at the Verandah Resort and Spa on Antigua.
