Lovely visit to Sunset Plaza although something is missing
We have been coming here for a number of years now. This visit we had the privilege of bring our children to the resort. First and foremost there is something missing as soon as you walk in. Javier is not at the desk near the entrance. It is weird to not see him there. He was such a staple and a kind person who would bend over backward to make your visit amazing. I truly hope the resort finds a replacement who is there as much as Javier was. It made the visit that much more special. Covid testing for traveling back to the US was super easy with a doctor visiting the hotel to do the testing. We did the nasal swab and within a couple of hours the clinic e-mailed us the test results. The cost is now $45 dollars. We just got home in time before the rules changed and now you have to get tested no more than 24 hours before you flight. The airport was much easier returning as well. The lines were much shorter then our visit back in March. Every room has an ocean view and because of the proximity of the building to the ocean the views are amazing. There is construction going on next door, but I was never bothered by the sound. The resort will change with the new building and it will be interesting in seeing the new dynamic of additional space. I am sure restaurants and seating will change as well. I am sure it will become a little more crowded as right now it never feels crowded. The food was amazing. Although dinners seemed to be a miss this year. There is no fiesta night when we were there which was a disappointment. Its fun to sit at a big table and visit with other guests. The bistro is open 24/7. The espresso machine is gone and the coffee is not as good as the machine used to make. But there is always hot coffee and pastries ready for anyone. The hotel is a short walk to downtown Puerto Vallarta. The kids actually walked many times to downtown. The Mega store is a short walk from the hotel as well if you need items like sun block. We walked downtown one day and took an Uber home for about 4 dollars. One piece of advise is when you arrive at the airport grab a taxi across the street. Talk to no one in the airport and exit the doors to the airport. Turn left and cross the bridge along the main road. Drop down and grab a taxi across the street. It's half the cost and the taxi drivers are the most friendliest people I meet. A special thank you to pool side waiters Saul, Luis, and Armando who were amazing. And kept our entire family feed and well lubricated. Truly amazing. I can't thank them enough for making my trip so nice. And a special shout out to Jose in the restaurant. He has been with Sunset for 11 years and it was nice to see a familiar face. He was always so very friendly and I learned a lot about Puerto Vallarta by talking with him. And with our kids who constantly at the swim up pool side bar a special shout out to Azwaldo who made amazing shot drinks and Julio. Our kids kept them busy and they did not disappoint. The vendors on the beach are amazing as well. We did a fishing trip with William who is a constant on the beach. A truly amazing time with lots of sea life and two Mahi, Mahi which my two boys caught. Do yourself a favor and visit Sunset Plaza with your family. Prices right now are so very reasonable and the level is service is amazing. Saul, Luis and Armando will take good care of you by the pool. We will be back in the winter with the entire family and are looking forward to staying here again. We have been coming here for a number of years now. Relaxing gem in PV
We had a great experience at Sunset Plaza. Full disclosure, while we did spend time in the pool every day and enjoy several meals, we treated the resort more like a hotel and spent a lot of time off the resort. The grounds and facilities are clean, well kept and beautiful. The service was amazing. As we always do, we made friends at the swim up bar and that's what really makes all-inclusive resorts special. This is a quiet resort, very few kids, not a lot of activities around the pool, but if you just want to relax and enjoy the view, it's perfect. The service was outstanding with every interaction we had, in particular at the lobby bar and breakfast at Mirador. The food was at best, fantastic (tacos al pastor by the pool), at worst, typical all inclusive food with very little variety (breakfast at mirador). We didn't try every restaurant, so I don't feel comfortable making any big judgments. Covid testing couldn't have been easier and results were on time. We will definitely be back to this resort when we are looking to get away. One thing I wish we had known before the day we left, you can exchange currency right at the front desk! Great vacation at Sunset Plaza
Unlike resorts on the Mayan where you might have to walk a long way to get to the ocean, Sunset Plaza has all it's amenities contained within a well laid out footprint. Pools, hot tubs (both adult and family) are in close proximity to the beach and the main restaurant. All rooms are ocean view. Staff members are incredibly friendly and will do anything to help. Of particular note, Joel, Mario, Armando, Arisai, Luis and Saul are the absolute best hotel staff I've ever experienced. Todos ustedes son increibles! Fall asleep to ocean waves
We asked for a room on a higher floor and got it. The elevators (2 beside each other) were fast. Each room has its own private balcony. The view is like out of a dream: Sail boats, paragliders, gorgeous sunsets (hence the resort name), and every night there were fireworks!!! Plus, you will drift to sleep to the sound of ocean waves. The whole resort was very COVID-conscious. There was a machine just inside the entrance that measured the temperature of your palm. All the staff wore masks and guests were asked to wear them in elevators and when walking around the place. The hotel is situated off the main road, and close to the ocean. The waves here are strong, so it is great that the pool is heated and that there is a view of the ocean from there. There is one main restaurant, all food a la carte, and they bring a huge menu in English or Spanish to order. There is no music/ partying around the pool. Good if you enjoy peace and quiet, and also more conducive to chatting with other guests and meeting people. The location of this resort is very handy to lots of great sites in Puerto Vallarta. It would be a long, hot walk but you can walk from here to the Walmart, and the Malecon. The taxi's and Ubers are not expensive. The staff seem very happy working here. Thanks especially to Mario & Ernesto. It will be great when all construction on the adjacent building is finished. Noise wasn't that bothersome, except for where the Yoga class was taking place. How to improve? Hammocks and new pillows. Otherwise, fue la perfección. We asked for a room on a higher floor and got it. The elevators (2 beside each other) were fast. A very fine, quiet resort.
We stayed as part of a 6 person group November 28-December 5, 2021. We were in room 617. Overall I thought this resort was excellent. Most of the food was excellent, drinks were all delicious and strong, and best of all were the friendly, engaging, welcoming staff. Some tips: - there is no music. Not by the pool in the daytime, nighttime entertainment is a small musical act in the Mirador restaurant, and that's it. - I wish there were hammocks somewhere to take a siesta. - the resort provided beach chairs and umbrellas, but no loungers. Comparative to some places the beach is a bit narrow, and there are lots of pushy vendors. - the pools were nice and cool - there are Jacuzzis as well with gorgeous decks but it was mainly too hot outside to enjoy them. - You need your room key to access the elevator but it will only give access to your floor. We were placed several floors down from the rest of our party so that made it inconvenient to visit one another to borrow sunscreen or what have you. - we heard from a few people that you could visit the Las Palmas resort next door to participate in their entertainment, pool, etc, but this was never said "officially". The Las Palmas seemed to be where the action was. - a cab to the Malecon was about $100MXN, or there is a convenient bus stop near the hotel for $10MXN - To get to the adults only pool is a little awkward, feeling like you have to walk all around the resort or else cut through the restaurant. - the beach service and poolside servers were amazing. - the resort is quite small. You will run into the same people over and over again. This is nice with friends and annoying with annoying guests haha. Food Review: - the Luciano restaurant rotates through several different Italian/Mediterranean menus. One thing they neglected to tell us when ordering is that ALL THE WINE OFF OF THE WINE LIST IS AT AN EXTRA CHARGE. Since we were on the all-inclusive plan this was an unpleasant surprise at the end of the nice meal. We ate at Luciano twice, once was great the other time was awful. - Mirador has Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. All are good. Just be aware that since it is all a la carte it takes a while so dont go there when you are starving or in a rush. They were very accommodating to menu adjustments/ special requests. I wish we had been there for lunch more days because there was so much choice on that menu. - for lunch they also have the "Aqua Bar" poolside service menu; and they do a pop up station as well. One day was tacos Al Pastor, one day was Ceviche/Aguachile, and one day was hamburgers, of the ones I saw. - We ate at the pizza place "Piccolo Allegro" one time and it was delicious. It took about 10 mins only for food. - Al Fresko, 24 hr snack bar. They would make you things off menu if you ask nicely, like a late-night pizza. The desserts there were absolutely delicious.
