Beware!!!
BEWARE!!!! It’s all about the sales. So we bought a package in 2019 and this is the first time at GRand Mayan. So we are members. BUT..without any benefits. While the looks of the property is very nice, that’s where it ends. From the time you check in you are pressured to attend the sales pitch. They offered 10% off everything we charge to the room. They gave us a privilege card but whenever we tried to use it we were told it can’t be used at that restaurant. We tried to cancel the sales pitch but we’re promised it was only to talk about our existing membership so we kept the appt. We told them upfront we aren’t buying anything. But we had to go through the entire sales pitch to include seeing the property.. They were so friendly until we said no to their offer. At that point they were extremely rude and dismissive. Our sales lady didn’t even thank us for coming or say goodbye.,as soon as we declined we were literally reduced to scum on their shoe …and the $2000 resort certificate we were promised turned out to be a fraud…it’s nothing but partial savings credits to use towards future stays at expensive hotels. You CANNOT use it for one stay…only a few hundred dollars towards each future stay. We will NEVER come back to a Vidanta. There are NO benefits to being a member. They show you an outrageous price then cut in almost in half thinking you are getting a deal but you are NOT!!! We have all the same privileges and MORE with UVC and that’s all inclusive with free entertainment! Vidanta has NOTHING free…not even entertainment. I NEVER write bad reviews about anything but I was i so disrespected that I couldn’t let this go without getting my experience shared. If you have an extra $$2.5m then this is the place for you. Living in the Jungle
Do you like waiting for buses? Never seeing the ocean from your room? Walking on slippery treacherous boardwalks? Needing a reservation for almost every restaurant? Feeling like you could never get back to room along the maze of narrow roads. Then this is the resort for you. The Grand Mayan at Vidanta is a gigantic resort set right in the jungle. To get from your room at one of the many hotels or residences you have to take a shuttle, like long golf carts, about 10 minutes to one of the pools or ocean beaches on the property. That doesn't take in account the time you might wait for it to arrive. The rooms are great and clean and lots of hot water. The staff are wondaful, helpful and courteous. Most know English. Food is very good and they have a huge sports bar called Salum that accesses 4 different restaurants. You can always get a table there. They have a Circ du Solei on property and well worth the price. Just get a seat, not the dinner package. Beaches were beautiful and kept clean by the staff. Was told by other vacationers there was good snorkeling on calm water days. This did not happen while I was there. Very wavy in November. They have a clinic for PCR tests right on the resort but results did not always arrive on time and I had to go to the clinic to get a print out of mine so I could get on the plane. Almost missed my shuttle to airport. Not impressed! Do you like waiting for buses? Never seeing the ocean from your room? Walking on slippery treacherous boardwalks? Could be enjoyable, but the experience is ruined by several things...
I would not return or recommend this place to others. And if they wanted to sell us on a "membership" (ie. timeshare), they should have provided a better experience, such as a television that works or a room that is not over one of the main tram stops, causing loud noise all day long until about 10 pm. THE GOOD: I) Free shuttle to resort from airport (but you have to pay for return) 2) The grounds are nice, and we enjoyed the walking paths 3) Spacious room with balcony (but unfortunately this balcony was not ideal... see below) 4) Decent food (but somewhat pricey) 5) Sprawling pools THE BAD: 1) Secluded location means hard to get tours, and costs $100 to get to Cancun and back. 2) They won't let you have any guests at the resort (even though it is not all-inclusive) 3) If you want peace and quiet, this is not the resort for you. Room is noisy, pool areas are noisy, and way too many children everywhere. 4) Wifi and cell service is spotty and doesn't always work. THE UGLY: 1) The TV in the room simply isn't functional (see photo) 2) Required a lot of time to get around (my Strava app said it was a 0.5 mile walk to the main pool from our room; 0.65 miles to the beach) 3) The beach is narrow, rocky, and more like a construction site. Starting early in the morning, there was literally a backhoe working on the beach and a chainsaw running for hours! 4) Constant badgering to attend their "membership update" (timeshare sales) presentation breakfast. Great resort, avoid salespeople
Aggressive time share sales staff. And lots of walking - this resort is huge and it’s hard to get around. Do not attend the time share (“buyers club” but still a time share type setup, like a pyramid scheme). The “1 hour” took 4.5 hours total to say no. We talked with 10-year owners who never get beach views because those are reserved for families like mine who are good marketing leads. The resort is really big. You walk everywhere. After a week we started to get the hang of it. But you can’t just walk to get coffee from Mayan - Copal. It’s a 15 min walk. Pools are amazing. We have 8 and 9 yr old boys and they loved them, and we all loved the Lazy River. So fun, especially when the wave pool ran and filled the lazy river! Beach is really nice and not crowded. Good body surfing and boogie boarding on 2-4’ waves. And you’re not haggled by vendors incessantly. Food is really good. But expect to pay 1-1.5x USA prices. At Custom Burger, 2 adults, 2 kids, we had 2 burgers, 2 salads, 2 wines, 2 beers, and 2 milkshakes. $150!! Staff were all quite friendly and accommodating. Overall great experience really soured by wasting nearly a whole day with slimy salespeople. Aggressive time share sales staff. And lots of walking - this resort is huge and it’s hard to get around. First-time Resort Visit - A Detailed Review (Thanksgiving week 2021)
Please forgive the extremely detailed review, but I’m hoping it will be a help to future “first-timers” such as myself. Here goes: I’ve never been to a resort like Vidanta before. Individual hotels/condos with expansive grounds, yes, but nothing this large. As others will attest, the property is MASSIVE. We probably only explored about 50% of it. CON: The check in process seemed needlessly long. Maybe this is something that happens at all resorts. We arrived from the airport to the Vidanta Central Lobby. From there, our luggage is taken by a bellman, and we board a tram for the Grand Mayan Lobby. Once at the Grand Mayan Lobby, we fill out an exorbitant amount of paperwork, put down a deposit, and then wait for a smaller tram to our individual building. Once at our building/room, we wait for luggage to be delivered. It just seemed like a lot, but again, maybe this is standard at large resorts. Number one recommendation: download the Vidanta app. It’s not perfect, but it is helpful. You can make restaurant reservations, access maps, etc. Again, improvements could be made, but it’s nice to have in your pocket. PRO: Everyone, from check in to check out was very helpful and friendly. Our room at the Grand Mayan was very nice, albeit a little dated. There was a kitchen/dining/living area in the middle and two nice suites on either side. Both had full baths, TVs, king size beds, and sitting areas that looked out on to a large patio with furniture and plunge pool. There was a nice kitchenette as well (small fridge/freezer, stove top, microwave, coffee maker, etc.) No oven, which didn’t matter for us. CON: The dishes in the condo left a bit to be desired. Plenty of coffee cups, wine glasses, and water glasses, but three plates in the entire place. Utensils were plentiful; however, there were virtually no suitable knives for cutting limes (or really anything). The large kitchen knife was so dull I was fearful of cutting myself, so we resorted to cutting with serrated butter knives. It’s not a deal breaker, but something to be aware of. The ice/tap water on the resort were both fine – our group of 7 consumed daily and no one fell ill. We stayed in building 10 of the Grand Mayan. Most of the reviews I read indicated buildings 1 – 8 were most walkable and gave better access to other areas of the resort. This is true – we took a tram nearly everywhere. But on the plus side, we were very close to the Central Lobby so one of the first to be dropped off on the way back. PRO: I’d read many complaints about the wait times for the trams and we did not find that to be a problem at all. We waited no longer than 10 minutes on any given trip, and only once was one so full we decided to wait for the next one. We explored the Grand Mayan infinity pool, Grand Mayan Sanctuary Pool, and Grand Mayan main pool. Highly recommend the infinity and sanctuary pools – they are smaller and quieter, but still have bars, lots of seating, etc. The main pool is HUGE and leads out to the beach. It’s very nice, but much more crowded. THE BEACH: From the Grand Mayan main pool, you can access the beach. It is rocky in areas, but there were people swimming. You’ll want water shoes, but some areas are much more navigable than others. The days we went were a little rough and windy, otherwise I probably would have gone in for a dip. One bummer was that all the little piers with palapas on the beach were closed to guests. It would have been nice to have been able to walk out. THE TIME SHARE SPIEL: We were in a condo gifted by my parents – we were never once approached about the presentation or anything like that. I can’t speak for others, but this was not an issue for us. GROCERY SHOPPING: The on-site store, the Jade, has a little bit of everything: groceries, alcohol, toiletries, clothes/souvenirs, and an in-house café. It’s more than you would pay off site, but nothing gave me sticker shock as we were at a resort. We had lunch one day at the café and the sandwiches were adequate. Beer/wine/alcohol prices were in line with what I’d expect at a resort. If you are planning on cooking for yourself A LOT, you might get a cab/shuttle to Playa Del Carmen to hit up a grocery store. We did this and got entirely too much – even when we were trying to be conservative. If you’re just wanting continental style breakfasts and/or mid-day snacks, you can avoid the cost and hassle of going to Play Del Carmen and just go to the Jade. It’s a little more expensive, but you’re not paying for transportation and you’re eating all you get. In my opinion, alcohol would be the primary motivator to go to a grocery store – we left a ton of unopened things (peanut butter, chips, etc.) It felt very wasteful. RESTAURANTS: We ate at several of the restaurants on site. There are many stand-alone places, and also an area called “Salum”, which houses lots of different restaurants and you can order from any/all of them, which is nice if you’re accommodating different tastes. A few memorable places include: La Cantina, Limon y Sal, and Robayaki Grill & Sushi. Havana Moon was decent and had great live music, and Balche was a nice poolside spot for a snack and margarita. We really wanted to try the Italian restaurant, Tramanto, but scheduled reservations for the wrong day. COVID TESTING: Covid testing is done on site. Bring cash or card, and your passport. They offer a few different tests – check with your airline to see what they accept. We were able to do the antigen test, and results were given within hours. Be patient. Everyone here is just doing their job. Schedule your test through the Vidanta app and give yourself enough time before you leave the resort. We left on a Saturday and had our tests done Friday morning. Overall, it’s a lovely place and we were pleased with the service all across the resort. If my parents were to gift us another condo there I would certainly take them up on it, but not sure I would seek it out if I were financing the entire trip.
