Lovely location for a multi-day visit to Tuscany
My wife and I stayed here for five days while I was attending a business meeting at the hotel. It was an excellent base for day trips and evening meals in other towns in Tuscany. Celle sul Rigo is a tiny hilltop town like so many others in Tuscany. There's nothing there but the locals watching the sunset and going about their lives. It's nice for a morning or evening climb and stroll The hotel is comfortable, rather rustic, with a fine dining room and terrace for outdoor eating and sipping wine while admiring a fantastic view. The rooms are separate apartments, and there is a meeting room on site for business. The staff is very accommodating. The attraction is the access (by car) to the surrounding villages, all by way of winding, scenic, traffic-free (in October), roads through the hills and farms of Tuscany. It only a few minutes to the baths in San Casciano dei Bagni or the fortress at Radicofani, and an hour or less to Montepulciano, Montalcino, Pienza, and a smaller but very attractive town that is often overlooked in the guidebooks called Cetona. In all, we heartily recommend Il Poggio for a quiet stay in a beautiful place some off, but near to, the beaten path. Relaxing, well landscaped and placed in Tuscany. Great front desk staff & food.
This is my second time at the resort. Last time was about 5 years ago. The place is rustic yet functional. The restaurant had reduced hours on this occasion (due to COVID-19 reducing the number of people at the resort). And it was amazing, as we remember it. Things that can improve the stay: some additional basic supplies like salt/pepper shakers, bowls for cereal or soup (there are none), bowl scraper, and a spatula for flipping food items on the stovetop. Also, no wine glasses (just small water glasses), which is surprising for Tuscany. The newer stick-free skillet was a welcomed item. A washer for clothes on site would be helpful. The range top worked well and we prepared breakfast on it on many days we were there. In addition, a bit more dish and shower soap and shampoo as the amount supplied is quite small. My partner found the bed mattress hard and not comfortable. He slept on the couch. The bed consisted of two twin mattresses along side one another and combined to make a queen which is sometimes done in Europe. If that will bother you, be aware and ask if they have something different. The view from the patio (and the grounds of the resort) was amazing. No air conditioning in the unit, but we managed by opening the windows at night and closing the unit in the day to prevent warming. In August, our thoughts on this might be different. Il Poggio.. a wonderful and relaxing place to enjoy the beauty of Tuscany
Wonderful staff, wonderful view and great location in the southern part of Tuscany. Located close to the natural hot springs of San Casciano Dei Bagni, it is the perfect place to relax, eat well and visit other destinations in the nearby area. Week at Il Poggio in Tuscany in January
Italy is magical. Took a chance going off season and it was great. Lucked out with beautiful weather. No crowds and folks with plenty of time to chat. Some places not open, but not a huge deal. Accommodations at Il Poggio were certainly adequate. I swapped an RCI week and got a one bedrm with pullout sofa. Small kitchen area. No dinner option at resort in Jan, but nice breakfast every morning (10€). Eduardo, proprietor, was delightful. Friendly and very helpful. They sell their own wine among other condiments. One restaurant in town that was great. Chiaro di Luna. Another trattoria up the hill was booked or closed while there. We had a car. Standard. That was an experience. Lol. Study up on road signs and how to use the self service pumps. But easy enough to find other places to eat. We started and ended in Rome. Took the train to Chiusi Chianciano station and rented a car. Avis is close by. Went through AAA for car rental. They saved us a lot of money and included insurance. $250/wk. Good deal. Drove back to train station another day and took train up to Florence. Long train ride, but easy enough to spend the day there. Other days drove to surrounding towns like Assisi, Orvieto, Siena, Montepulciano, Chianti, San Gimigiano, etc. Each town is more spectacular than the rest. No end to the beauty and history. Very nice people, but other than that.....
We had a week at the "resort" through RCI. The owners are very nice and welcoming. That is probably the nicest thing I can say. The whole place is quite rustic without any refinements whatsoever. The main building and the rooms we saw have not been updated, probably forever. The location is quite rural, and there is nothing to do in the town itself. The rooms were adequate in size, but the bed was horribly uncomfortable, and we ended up sleeping on the pullout couch. An expensive half-board was required, but the food was terrible and very disappointing. Raw pasta that crunched like plastic, and pizza that probably came out of a box. I would not recommend this location to anyone. We had a week at the "resort" through RCI. The owners are very nice and welcoming. That is probably the nicest thing I can say.
