Never agaion
There has been an ongoing problem with water in Saint Anne and Saint Francois, where the resort is located. Water is never available at night and some days we had no water at all while in the unit. We had to buy our own drinking water as the water was unfit to drink. One couple we talked to had mixed up the bought water we unit water and the wife was sick for a week. We had to constantly refill water bottles when we did have water so we could use that water to flush and wash dishes, after we boiled it. We were never informed by RCI or the resort in advance of our arrival or when we made the exchange. We would never have gone to this resort had we know of the water problems. Furniture was old, uncomfortable and he couch was missing the backrest cushions. The balcony had rotten wood and joists and was unsafe to step on from the bedroom door. Part of the steel support frame for the balcony was severely rusted. This resort in no way deserves to be classified as a gold crown resort. The shower head leaks and gets water on the floor, faucets are so old much of the paint has been worn off. Cheap ceiling fan did not work. Air conditioning usage was limited to 8 P.M. to 8 A.M. Air conditioning unit was only in the bedroom. Sofa in reception area had severely depressed seat area, some with torn lattices. Great place, but beware of water outages!!!
We've been coming to the Green-Blue Houses (GBH) since 2005, often on RCI exchanges but sometimes we've paid for weeks directly to GBH. We really love the building, the apartments, the location, St Francois, and the island. It is our favourite place in the whole of the Caribbean, and we've been to almost all islands. GBH is a single multi-story building of 22 apartments on 3 floors, or really on 4 floors as most of the 3rd floor apartments have the bedrooms and bathrooms up the stairs on the 4th floor. Most apartments are 1 bedrooms, there is one studio unit (#19) and one 2-bedroom unit (#17). The apartments face either out to the sea or into the marina. The sea-facing ones are preferable as they get a nice breeze, whereas the marina-facing ones can be really stuffy. As many have mentioned, AC is only on at night, and for some weird reason is on from 7pm to 9am in our current unit (#16). Also as others have mentioned the units are getting "tired" and are in need of a total refresh. But they are very serviceable and fit for purpose, as long as your expectations are not those of a Gold Crown RCI resort. Ironically, GBH has been Gold Crown for many years, but it isn't really of that standard. Housekeeping only once per week (Tuesday), with new towels another day (Thursday). The front desk staff, Martine and Veronic, are wonderful - Martine speaks some English. From GBH it is very easy to walk around St Francois, and there are some local beaches in the town. But to get the best benefit, you must have a car. You MUST go to Pointe des Chateaux and climb to the cross - a more spectacular view you'll be hard pressed to find. Then go to the beach nearby, and decide how far you want to walk along it - the first part is family, the second part is topless, the third part is nudist, and the fourth part is gay. Lots of great restaurants in town - we highly recommend Le Poivrier and Le Rhumarin. BUT BUT BUT, as others also have mentioned, there is a severe water supply problem in Grande Terre and there are regular water outages. Usually twice a week from nominally 6pm to 6am, but in reality around 9pm to 6am. These aren't the problem, as one can work around them. The biggest issue, especially if you're on the top floor (units 14 to 22) is that the pressure drops almost every day and you have no water on the upper floors. You have to shower in the ground floor staff area, and fill bottles from the tap there for your toilet and cooking etc. This is really frustrating when you come back from the beach and want to wash off. We've taken to filling the bath when there is water (usually from about 4am to about 9am) so we have some water for washing during the day. One final point - I read all the time particularly from Americans about how arrogant the French are. This is nonsense. We've spent a LOT of time in France (6 weeks per year for 5 years in southern France) and a lot of time in Guadeloupe, and the French are as lovely as any other people. Lovelier in many respects. OK, yes, don't expect them to speak English, best is if you have some basics in French, or at the very least not get annoyed that they don't speak English. Also you have to remember that being a waiter in France is a recognised profession and career and pays well, it's not a minimum-wage job, so waiters expect to be treated with the respect they deserve. If you don't treat them with respect, you shouldn't be surprised if they don't treat you with respect. Come here with your mind open and you'll really enjoy being immersed in French culture. I have added photos of each floor so you see the units. Best IMHO are units #16 and #17, then #18, and the corresponding units on the floors below. Amazing location, great staff, apartment a little tired
My wife and I spent a week here (Saturday-Saturday) in June 2019. It was an RCI timeshare exchange. According to RCI, this has been a Gold Crown Resort for the last eleven straight years. The location is perfect, set right over the marina. There are several restaurants, bars, sailing and scuba diving tour operators within strolling distance. The views from our room (#4) of the marina and the Caribbean Sea were beautiful (see my photographs). Martine at the front desk was lovely, tolerating my pigeon French and sharing language tips. She allowed to extend our check out to suit our travel plans. The actual apartment - despite clearly having a few new appliances; dishwasher, refrigerator/freezer - was a little tired. Though “in keeping”, the sofa was very thin and droopy (see photograph). The patio furniture was grubby. The towels were very thin. Only the bedroom had AC; the sitting room had a ceiling fan. The TV had just eight all-French language channels. There was no proper shower - just a shower head in the bath. We had to kneel to shower. We recommend that the resort provides a folder of in-room information for its guests. There is street parking outside on a first-come, first-served basis. We parked easily, but we understand it is busier in January and February. We explored both halves of the island (see my other posts) and had a very good week overall. Guadeloupe was lovely, and safe. We recommend the island to you. Be prepared for the “issues” mentioned and you’ll have a great time. If I have assisted, please give me a “Helpful” vote. Thank you. Marina view
We stayed a week in a 2-bedroom apartment through a timeshare exchange. The trading value required for the exchange is relatively low, so the exchange was good value. Front desk speaks also English. Everybody is polite. However, the arrival day is Saturday and the front desk closes already at 6 pm which is early considering the heavy traffic on the island (as well as the long lines at car rental at the airport). We barely made it. After that we would have had to make a phone call and I have no idea how long a wait it would have been to be let in. The building is easy to find and visible from the road (just look at the picture what the house looks likes, the other houses are a different style). Parking is on the roadside. There was always space. Of course not very near on the arrival and departure days when we had the luggage… Bakery and a supermarket and some other shopping and car rental are within walking distance. Although I advise to rent the car from the airport. The apartment offered a great view over St Francois Marina. We loved having breakfast on our balcony facing the Marina and watching sunsets as well. The rooms are clean and good size. The kitchen and utencils are okay. The refrigerator and freezer could have been colder and I could not figure out how to make it so. Master bedroom and bathroom were upstairs, the 2nd bedroom downstairs. Oddly, there was no chair of any kind in the master bedroom. The pillows (as some others have mentioned) are absolutely ridiculous. I used two of them on top of each other to make some kind of a pillow. I never saw such bad pillows. Wifi was very weak in the apartment, worked mostly at the entrance door only. On Tuesday the apartment was serviced and on Thursday towels changed. One major issue on the island is that in many communities the water company has scheduled water cuts. They did not inform us about this, so it was quite a surprise to be without water one evening. When I inquired about it the following morning (front desk open only in the mornings), it turned out they had a printed schedule for the water cuts at the front desk area. They should have told us. There is a huge number of water bottles and a couple of canisters in the apartment the flush the toilet and wash hands etc. We had two cuts during our stay, from 6 pm to 6 am. So it is very important to be aware of this, not to arrive from the beach and be desperately without water. And please understand, it is not just this place, it is many communities on the island (including the restaurant where we had dinner). It was not a major issue but they really should have informed us on arrival. Bathroom is good size with double vanity. However, there is no shower curtain in the bathtub so there is some trouble with getting water where you don’t want it. There were no instructions about check-out in the apartment just in the lobby a notice asking to leave it how we would like to find it on arrival. I found this confusing because there was cleaning staff to clean the apartment (or maybe some people are very messy and they want to avoid that). But anyway we were expected to take out the trash ourselves. Some evenings there was some music from the Marina and some noise but not really much. Air conditioning is on from 6 pm to 8 am. I did not find this a problem as we did not spend the days in the apartment and in the morning when I made breakfast and we had the breakfast I kept the balcony door open, so this aired the apartment nicely as there was some breeze from the sea. There were no insects so this was fine. A car is need to enjoy the island and the beaches. There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance. We definitely preferred two restaurants we found through Lonely Planet: Le Mabouya dans la Bouteille and Le Metis Cafe. These are located one block from the Marina and we had some trouble locating them at first but when we found them we did not go back to the restaurants in Marina. In that street there were a couple of other restaurants but we were so happy with these two that did not try the other ones. Prices were very reasonable. Especially as no tips are expected. Good Location and nice units, but be careful about the water shortage and no AC during the day
Location is right in the heart of the best Marina with a lot of bars and restaurants and all of the boats. But the city shuts the water off every other day or 3 and that is a big pain. And it get's very hot during the day when the sun is shining and there is no AC from 8 am to 5 pm. No pool and the beach(s) is a walk of at least several blocks. The closest beach is the one by the Marina Enterance. Looks to be private if you don't know about it because the tree covers the open walk way and you see the gate across the drive so often people think it's closed to public. But it's not. I think all beaches are public by law. It's a very French Island so come with that whole attitude that the French think they are better than everyone else so we had several rude/arrogant servers. I'm sure part of that is because we didn't speak French so relied on our English to get by and that was probably a mistake. Most of the restaurants don't open until 7:30 pm so that's a bit of a pain and it seems that they don't really keep regular hours. This could be that we were there the week after "high" season, and Easter week, but it seems very suspicious. Book you tours in advance (especially Petite Terre as it's a eco reserve and has limited visitors every day) as they were almost all booked up by the time we got there and we didn't book anything in advance so had to settle for a couple very average tours. Be careful of the coral as it can cut your feet quite quick and most of the beaches have a "rough" entry. Water shoes would be a good idea, especially for kids who are running in and out without thinking.
