A mixed bag
On arrival the lodge was freezing cold which isn’t very welcoming especially after a 5 hour drive due to road closures following Storm Arwen. Having stayed at similar properties over the past 2 years there was no ‘welcome’ whatsoever, no information, no bottle of Prosecco, nada and for the price was missing the personal touch. It was clean (ish) but a mark on the bedroom wall which looked as if it could easily removed with a good scrub caused me to look in a bit more detail and overall it needs a refurb to update it and bring it into the 21st century. Blinds don’t fit properly at the windows. Mirrors are reminiscent of a Travel Lodge. The shower is excellent and powerful but the rest of the bathroom is from the 90’s. An electric fan heater ingeniously mounted on the bathroom wall? You get the picture. Kitchen was fine and well equipped. TV old with limited channels. WiFi was good. The reason for the Lodge being sooo cold on arrival became clear, when you check out you are asked to open all windows (COVID), all heaters are electric and you have to pay extra for electricity used! £40 for 4 nights, outrageously expensive and for this reason alone I would never return. The amenities and restaurants at the resort are very good. Particularly liked The Boathouse. A few strange arrangements in restaurants such as putting all guests in one area (pandemic?) when they weren’t busy and putting couples next to large groups. Customer service was very good. Freezing rooms and unhelpful staff
My room has been freezing for two nights and every time I raised the issue to staff they told me they were calling maintenance. Sadly learnt that “maintenance” was never reached and my room remains freezing! Seriously unhelpful staff and frankly felt like they were not happy to help Me with the matter. Heating indoors is a basic human necessity, it’s not that I was asking for anything unusual! There was ZERO heating!!! And the staff simply did not care!!! Luxurious stay
We stayed in one of the detached lodges for 1 week (lodge 88). The lodge was fantastic. Really spacious with an open kitchen lounge and dining room on the first floor plus outside balcony with views of the golf course in front of us and Loch Lomond in the distance. We had 2 double bedrooms downstairs both en-suite and we also had a another bathroom on the first floor. Every room really comfortably and luxuriously furnished. We slept really well there. The lodge was well equipped with a fully fitted kitchen and we had a washing machine and tumble dryer too which was a nice bonus! There was a sauna but it wasn’t usable - I think it was switched off due to covid. Though there are a lot of lodges they are laid out really well and it’s really peaceful and quiet and we really felt like we were in the middle of nowhere with a lot of privacy. The service we received from staff at guest relations and at the marina was excellent. Everyone really helpful and friendly. We also ate at the boathouse which is a lovely restaurant on the loch with a great informal ambience, excellent service and high end food. With the 20pc off discount for staying at the lodge it’s really good value for money. The Cameron house leisure centre wasn’t open yet so we had access to the Cameron club spa which was a 15 min drive from the lodge. We had children and children’s swimming times were limited and had to be booked in advance. The pool was a bit busy at times but the kids enjoyed it. The spa for the adults was lovely with saunas, steam rooms, a hydrotherapy and infinity pool. The changing rooms were not as clean as they could be but guess it was busier than usual due to the leisure centre at the Cameron house being closed. Really nice to have the access to these facilities though. We used the marina to hire katakanus and bikes and the service was excellent. They could do with having a bit more equipment (eg they don’t have any double kayaks), however Loch Lomond leisure at Luss offer a good range and is a lovely spot to go on the loch. Overall would highly recommend the lodges at Cameron house. Really luxurious and a great base to explore Loch Lomond and the surrounding area. Great, but with a bitter taste in my mouth
So this is a review of 2 halves. 1st - we booked one of the lodges for our first UK staycation as my wife and I had stayed at the Cameron House hotel a few years ago and really enjoyed it. As we were coming with our 3 teenage kids, the lodge made perfect sense financially as well as providing ample space. We were not disappointed - the lodge was fantastic - great condition, plenty of space, everything worked and was clean - thoroughly recommended for a family stay. The lodge deserves 5 stars. 2nd - one of the reasons we booked Cameron House was because we wanted to go to the Cameron Grill for our 20th anniversary dinner - leave the kids in the lodge and get our 18 yo daughter cook them dinner while we enjoy a special date night for ourselves. We were also looking forward to letting the kids enjoy the pool to burn off some energy. We had heard about the fire but were assured when we made the booking that the hotel would be open July, with plenty of safety time if they were delayed a little before our visit in August. We were able to book the restaurant online and a few other activities in the local area - holiday set. Then, a couple of weeks before were due to go my wife got a call to check if we were aware that the hotel was still not open and that we would not be able to eat at the Cameron Grill. Hardly an apology and, oh by the way, the pool is also not open but you can book the small pool at the spa, but only for a single time slot each day. By this point, we were well inside their 8 week refund window and too late to book anywhere else (I did check) as they were all fully booked, so we were left with a deflated choice. Very disappointing. I can’t believe that they didn’t know much earlier and could have warned us and either offered a refund or alternative dates but instead left us with really no choice. No apology or bowl of fruit or anything when we arrived to say sorry for the inconvenience, nothing. The poor customer service rates a 1 star. Hence the 3 star rating I gave this review as an average of the 2 halves. So, while the lodge was great, just out of principle we won’t be back. A real mixture of feelings about this place....
Pros- Great location on the Loch, Very nice staff, Great activities, Villa very spacious. Cons - Very expensive. When booked it was advertised with all the amenities of the main hotel. Sadly, the hotel never opened in time. (No meaningful compensation offered). So far less amenities than I was expecting when booked. Television - what is it with this place?- TV reception was amazingly hit and miss. Two good meals in one hotel restaurant, one not so good meal in the other hotel restaurant. So its mixed feelings. I think had the main hotel been opened in time as originally advertised this place would have been great. As it was I have mixed feelings. Good luck Cameron House/Lodges. You have the basics right, but still much to work on I feel. Anthony Pros- Great location on the Loch, Very nice staff, Great activities, Villa very spacious. Cons - Very expensive.
