Wonderful People, Excellent Adventures
My newly wed husband and I enjoyed our honeymoon trip to Acapulco Mexico at the end of November into December at the Grand Mayan for one week! The front desk was kind and knew enough English to answer our questions regarding our stay. After our first night there, the room smelled like it had mold or mildew but the resort staff was accommodating and after we transferred to a new room, we had no more issues with that. We took advantage of some of the excursions offered like the ATV (that I probably had a little too much fun on!) which allows you to explore some of the local coconut fields and village, (the fresh coconut water is DELICIOUS) !! Deep sea fishing where my husband caught a 7ft 5inch sail-fin and I caught about a 4ft Mahi Mahi with several black fin tuna and snorkeling at La Roqueta Island with lunch included! When booking our flights there was a travel advisory for Acapulco, but after visiting there it’s not anything that warrants a travel advisory: just be wise and take the same precautions as you would in any country. Interesting enough, they actually have specific police dedicated just to help and protect tourists. Our friends Acapulco Mike and a Triple T-Tony with Quinto Sol that drove us to various locations around Acapulco for the excursions, personal requests like the mall- they were so helpful, informative, kind and funny! They really made our stay special and memorable! We also had the pleasure of eating some authentic home cooked meals with the Quinto Sol team so if you are nice enough and they like you, play your cards right then maaaybe you can taste some authentic, true, home made Mexican dishes also!! Haha; but if not, I say this to let you know if Acapulco Mike or Triple T Tony are not available any of the guys with Quinto Sol are good company while you stay in Acapulco Mexico! If you are wanting to explore the local area or do any of the excursions, I couldn’t recommend that company more! After our great catch, the Captain helped us get in contact with a gentlemen he knew and trusted to help my husband get his sail-fin mounted on the spot and Acapulco Mike stayed with us also which gave me more peace of mind about the entire process. Mike and Triple T took us to a local restaurant owned by his friend Felix and his wife that cooked our catch for us on the spot, without notice that same day and they were happy to do so! Definitely go to Felix’s to eat!! It’s local, family owned and operated and is competition to even the best of chefs! My husband is a foodie so I don’t say that lightly. Literally the best fish I’ve ever had in my life- even if you’ve had Mahi or any other deep sea catch cooked before- you ain’t had it like this! If you like adventure, exploring the local life, are willing to try something different, then the excursions with Quinto Sol are the way to go! Of course if you just want to stay at the resort, it’s wonderful also: room service, shuttle service to restaurants nearby, lazy river, lots of pools, a water park we didn’t go to because it’s more of a family/kids dynamic so I can’t speak on that, but everyone we encountered was kind and helpful. Hotel Excursions
We had a great time at the Grand Mayan last week. One of the highlights of our stay was the excursion from the hotel via private taxi. We requested Baldo after reading a previous review and he did not disappoint! Baldo was retired history professor and knows all about Acapulco and you can tell that he is very proud of his city. He was open to making impromptu detours and even took us to a great little taqueria on the way home. Definitely would recommend a tour with him if you stay here. Grand Mayan Acapulco 2021
I will show some of the pro's and con's of this vidanata location compared to puerto vallarta/nuevo vallarta and riviera maya locationa. First of of all the beach was our favorite part. Water was very warm and calm (i see other reviews say the beach was too harsh but there were small children in it so maybe they are not used to the ocean). There are alot of vendors on the beach selling everything so you have to be prepared to say "no gracias" every 15 minutes when they walk by. They sell massages on the beach (much cheaper and better than at the spa), horse back riding, atv rental, all kinds of jewelry, food, sunglasses, tattoos, hair braids, hats, ceramics, and tours. Do not get the tours from the beach vendors because they will definitely be more expensive than booking them in advanced through a local guide. We highly recommend SEBASTÍAN HERNANDEZ from ACAPULCO FOR ALL for any tours or transportation needs. He was perfect for us and took care of everything. For half the price of the local tours he took us on a acapulco highlight tour where we saw the famous cliff divers show, diego riveras mural, flamingo hotel, amazing tacos, and even released baby turtles. He included extras like picking us up from and returning to the airport and getting a covid test at a local pharmacy with the cost of the tour. This is 5x cheaper than paying the resort for covid test. He spoke great english and was not only funny and friendly, but also extremely knowledgeable about every detail of the tour becauce he has lived here his whole life and has a history degree from here. It's great to get off the resort for a day or two and see the "real acapulco". It is very safe too, a google search will make it look dangerous but I can confirm we were completely safe and everyone was friendly...they do not want to scare off any tourist income so this makes sense. Pro's of Grand Mayan Acapulco: -beach is nicer than other vidanata location -very beautiful location -extremely covid safe (hand sanitizer and masks inside everywhere...dont worry, you dont need to wear one at the pool or beach) -the pool area is set up perfectly, what i mean by this is that if you are sitting pool side its set up staggered so that you almost always have an ocean view up at the pool. At other locations the pool is very far from the beach. -short walking distances to everything, no need for golf cart shuttles everywhere, I could walk from the beach to our room and back in 10-15 minutes - the local tour by SEBASTÍAN from ACAPULCO FOR ALL, It really is a must if you're going to be in the area and affordable (we did more and spent less with him than at the resort just drinking) Con's of Grand Mayan Acapulco: -seems like the happy hour is shorter here (12-1 and then 4-5) Ithink in nuevo vallarta it is 10-2. -the beds/pillows were so stiff and firm that my neck and and back started to hurt by the last day. You can probably ask for better pillows but your are stuck with the bed. -not much activities compared to nuevo vallarta -the restaurant selection is also smaller at this location and the one sushi restaurant did not serve sushi anymore so we ordered delivery from Los Tarascos (Sebastian recommended them and they were the best thing we ate) -they had alot of construction and renovations going on. The main area in the middle where they have water and lights around the acrobat/music shows was completely drained and unsightly. There were no actual shows either, only a simple live band from 9pm-11pm I will show some of the pro's and con's of this vidanata location compared to puerto vallarta/nuevo vallarta and riviera maya locationa. One of our best vacations ever!
After you have spent your first day on the beach, in and out of the warm ocean water, enjoying drinks and food served by Gustavo and have purchased a few moments from the vendors-go to the bell desk at the entrance and ask for Victor. Have him arrange a tour with Acapulco Mike and Tony. You won’t regret it. Mike is born and raised in Acapulco and speaks impeccable English. He is proud and extremely knowledgeable about Acapulco-knowing secret stories and history of the area. His conversations make you want to learn more about Acapulco. And return to take another tour! We saw the cliff divers from a cool, shaded patio and had a delicious lunch at La Cabana. Saw Los Flamingos Hotel and learned about the glamorous American movie stars that made Acapulco a destination. I highly recommend Mike and Tony! Thank you Victor for pointing us in the right direction! For great attention
At Vidanta Acapulco we had one week of family vacations, under excellent attention, great golfing and amazing beach. Very good location and commercial points around.
